WILDLIFE ART

WILDLIFE PAINTING AND DRAWING

My two interests of wildlife and art ignited at the same time and have been bound together ever since.  Only by experiencing the subject in situ can I start to paint and draw.  It's this initial observation through sketching and painting that allows me to capture the life and vigour of the subject.  Sketching and painting outside has directed my approach to artwork.  Fieldwork makes you see form rather than detail, it encourages a more concise spontaneous approach.

BRITISH WILDLIFE

My local patch is always providing new ideas for paintings and being ideally situated in Yorkshire I have many rich and varied places close at hand to visit.  I also mix in trips further afield when possible ranging from Scotland, through Northumberland and down to Norfolk.  Many of my subjects I only get to see a few times a year, others are almost part of my daily life.  The more fieldwork I do the better understanding and insight I gain.

OTTERS

Otter Paintings and Drawings

My fascination with otters started years ago during a trip to the west coast of Scotland.  As with so many wildlife encounters luck is crucial.  Whilst hiking along a remote sea loch I paused to watch the antics of a hooded crow by the tide line.  My attention was drawn by the glistening form of an animal at the water's edge.  It slid over rocks and under kelp before emerging onto a weed covered boulder, where it paused to devour a morsel before slipping silently back into the water and disappearing.  I was aware at the time that I had experienced one of those magical moments that can prove elusive in the natural world.  I was determined to observe, draw and paint these mysterious and charismatic animals.

In 2011 my second solo book 'Otter Shores' was published.  A culmination of work with these elusive animals portraying observations and encounters on the wild and remote west coast of Scotland.  Constantly subject to the dynamics of weather, light and season.
